Cell phone replacement hunt

July 1st, 2002 (02:30 pm)

I find the so called next generation, web appliance cell phones to be functionally overloaded
pieces of crap. I just want a cell phone that: 1. has a high contrast screen. 2. can send and recieve
short messages. 3. is sturdy and well built, and 4 has ir / possibly has bluetooth. I don't want
one of these new fangled zillion color java beasties. Has anyone at all had a good experience with their
cell phone / overlap with most of the above areas of functionality?

I like my Nokia 8290. It has those features, plus it's small. I've dropped it a few times and it has survived, and it's small enough to fit in the pocket of a pair of reasonably tight jeans. When the body gets scuffed up, you can get a new one cheap.

I don't get this whole color-screen java web-browser phone thing. The problem with my PDA is that the screen is too small; I want my PDA screen to be larger, and my phone to be smaller. That's a fairly basic incompatibility. Someone must want these new wonderphones, though.

Feel free to take a look at mine, though it is a GSM phone and thus can't do analog roaming. (It's a Siemens S40.)

What color is the backlight? I've seen s40s with bluish green backlights (which have abominably poor contrast), but I seem to remember that your phone has a yellow (blessed higher contrast) backlight.

Mine has a blue backlight. I've never had a problem with it, though you may be pickier.
