visual smorgasbord (instant psychedelia, just insert holomorphic functions here)

December 29th, 2002 (01:22 pm)

I've been playing around with seeing complex functions. This is nifty. As my sister said "ooh, pretty pictures"

prerequisites: access to unix system with gimp, ability to play with patterns
step 1: install the mathmap plugin
step 2: install Hans Lundmark's wrapper script in ~/.gimp-1.2/scripts
step 3: spend some time viewing various functions, so their poles and structure is impressed upon your visual imagination
step 4: turn on some techno music, interpose your hands between closed eyes an a sunbeam, and wave
them vigorously. (I suppose that such waving can be accomplished with a pair of motors and baffles too)

Re: ping

I'm in a fantastic mood at the moment, though that's probably the mathcrack and language crack -- I'm a little zonked out.
My trip to Cleveland, was on the whole good, though dealing with my family was rather bothersome. My father tutors schoolchildren
of various ages in various subjects, and the older of my sisters was preparing to go to NYNY this sunday to start her post-school
life (again, DC didn't work out for her). She wants to do some type of production work in broadcasting. (maybe eventually producing,
but at the moment helping to shepherd footage in one way or the other into a broadcastable form). That was the Wednesday
before last. My friends weren't in sufficient concentration to do engage in group activities until Saturday, so I spent
a couple of days being antsy. My other sister and my mother arrived on Saturday and tensions abounded. I went out
to Le Cav Du vin (I think I may have misremembered it's name -- The Wine Cave) and has wine and baked brie with my sisters.
The next day I went to a creperie on the cleveland's west side and had a plesant brunch (that was sunday).

I didn't do much on Monday. I saw Steve for the first time in a year last Tuesday. He's taken up smoking and slightly pudgier
than he was before. Grah. I had a brief Christmas dinner with my family and then departed on the train early on the 25th.

Of people:
my interaction with Steve was good, though brief. I'm reminded that his competency with language is not particularly wide
ranging in character. I think that most of his emotional expressiveness is rather wrapped up in his musical self, and that
the remainder can be overly dry and formal. Neh.. I'm not going to be interacting with him on a regular basis nor would
I want it, so I didn't much mind.

my family is thorny. eh
